Gullivers Travels by Jonathan Swift

Jonathan Swift

Gullivers Travels was the first novel to be written by Jonathan Swift. It is a satirical travelogue written in 1726, and it is considered one of the most famous novels ever written. The book grew out of a series of letters to his friend, Sir Lionel Johnson about travel destinations he proposed. He wrote: “I shall consider the matter again in my next letters […] I have likewise thoughts about that part of my journey which I call abroad” (Swift 1694: 76). This idea was enough for Swift to write this travelogue and it became an instant success. Its publication caused a huge scandal as many thought it was nothing more than fiction (Swift 1694: 77). It sold 200,000 copies in its first year and has sold over 2 billion since then
