I am a professor of African-American literature and cultural studies at the University of North Carolina-Wilmington. I teach courses on black women's literature, and at the beginning of each semester I assign Gloria Naylor's "The Women of Brewster Place."The Women of Brewster Place is one of the most poignant novels written by African American author Gloria Naylor. It tells the story of a black girl named Toni Morrison, who becomes an author and intellectual during her college years.
"This is one of my favorite books. Gloria Naylor is a great author and this is one of her best."Gloria Naylor wrote this book when she was in her early 20s. Gloria changed her name from Gloria Jean to Gloria Naylor after she wrote this book. The Women of Brewster Place was published in 1982.
"I loved the characters in Gloria Naylor's book, The Women of Brewster Place. I read through the book and felt like I was one of them. They were so real and so flawed that I couldn't help but connect and care for them. This is an empowering story about how one family used to be, and how they became better people. I loved the book, and I would recommend it to everyone."-Audrey
I needed to write a literature review about The Women Of Brewster Place and Tortured For Christ books. I read The Women Of Brewster Place with pleasure and got an A+ for my book review. Gloria Naylor is a wonderful writer.
