Thirteen Moons is a novel about the life of a young black girl in the early 1900s. The story starts from her childhood and then goes on to cover her whole life, with the focus on her relationships with other members of her family.The main character, Lena, is a twelve-year-old girl living in rural Mississippi at the turn of the twentieth century. Her mother dies giving birth to Lena's younger sister, and their father remarries two years later. This new stepmother has three daughters of her own, as well as a son who was adopted by them from Germany at a young age.
