The Book Thief by Markus Zusak

Markus Zusak

The Book Thief is a historical fiction novel about a nine-year-old narrator, Death, and the events of Nazi Germany between 1939 and 1945. The Book Thief tells the story of Liesel Meminger, who is sent to live with a foster family outside Munich. She discovers the power of words as she draws strength from reading passages from books, laboring under her new sense of shame.Death haunts the novel as he tries to compel Liesel to come to him with injustices against her. He appears as an ordinary man in at least one instance when he gives her a book that would have been taken away from her by Nazi raiders had not Death intervened.

The Book Thief is a story about Liesel Meminger, who lives in Munich during World War II. She has a happy life with her loving father, her loving brother, and her loving sister. Liesel's father works at the local bookstore and she loves to go there and read books on the shelves. When the bookstore burns down, Liesel is taken in by Hans Hubermann and his wife Rosa. Hans is a Jew, but he hides it and pretends to be Christian
I loved The Book Thief. I cried. I laughed. I fell in love with the characters and the story. This book is captivating! It is hard to put down and you know you can't stop reading until you've finished it! I absolutely love how the author uses words and imagery to make you feel like you are a part of the story, hiding behind your own tree, as Death searches for his next victim.
